One of Nation’s Oldest Lighthouses Receives a Makeover from CertaPro Painters

Preserving America’s most-photographed and oldest operating lighthouse, Portland Head Light, is a good thing, especially because it first warned local Cape Elizabeth residents of British attacks along the coastline over 200 years-ago and later, aided sailors navigating the craggy inlets. Portland Head Light, the oldest of Maine’s 66 lighthouses, is undergoing a facelift this spring as the tourist hot spot receives a new lick of paint from CertaPro Painters, the nation’s only national painting company.

Constructed in 1791 by George Washington, the 72 foot-high lighthouse, consisting of a conical tower and keeper’s quarters constructed of rubble stone with a brick lining, was lit with 16 whale oil lamps. Subsequent additions resulted in a raised tower, the installation of second order Fresnel lens and later the auto-beacon. The current keeper’s quarters was home to the head and assistant lighthouse keepers families until 1989.

Today, Portland Head Light attracts visitors to its award-winning museum, located in the keeper’s quarters, which contains a number of lighthouse lenses and interpretive displays, as well as a gift shop. The lighthouse is situated in the Fort William Park, which boasts nature trails, picnic areas, ruins of an old stone mansion and breathtaking views of Portland Harbor and Casco Bay. During the renovation process, the area around the lighthouse will be closed to the public for approximately six to eight weeks.

Portland Head Light’s approximately $70,000 renovation program consists of a series of repair and maintenance activities to the exterior of the tower and keepers quarters, including the removal of old surfaces, updating masonry surfaces and re-painting the entire building. All work will be approved by the Maine Historical Society.


The paintwork by CertaPro Painter’s six man-strong team of skilled professionals will remain faithful to the original scheme: white on the tower, black on top, and green trim on the keeper’s quarters.

“Restoring the Portland Head Light is important in preserving the legacy of George Washington and his commitment to the residents of Cape Elizabeth and the nation,” says Ernie MacVane, facilities manager for the Town of Cape Elizabeth. “CertaPro Painters’ skill and knowledge of complex painting programs will help realize the potential of this historic landmark for the benefit of the community.”

To execute the renovation program, the painting company will scaffold the entire tower and keeper’s quarters, a complex feat in itself, before removing old paint and subsequently applying fresh coats of paint.

Portland Head Light was initially the responsibility of the United States Department of the Treasury until the property was deeded to the Town of Cape Elizabeth in 1993. Today, the United States Coast Guard maintains the actual light and the fog signal, but the remainder of the property is managed by the Town of Cape Elizabeth.
