Many of us love that soft skin feeling you get when you hop out of the shower and moisturize with coconut oil, body butter, or baby lotion. And its easy to keep our hands in tip-top shape with manicures and a little hand cream, but it's a whole lot harder to hold onto soft feet. They feel great after a pedicure, but less than a week later, it seems like they're in grim shape again. There are ways to keep them soft all the time without much work... no mani pedi required. We've rounded up a few of these foot care tips to help you get started:
1) Start in the shower
The first place you should show your feet some love is in your shower. Most people just let the soap and water drip down and suds up their feet, and this technically does get them clean. Actually washing them with a washcloth or a loofah will wear down all that tough skin, though, so it pays to spend a little time showing your toes a little TLC each time you rinse off.
2) Scrub them twice each week
To take your feet to a whole new level of softness, try using an actual scrub on them twice a week. It doesn't take long at all - a quick scrub in the shower will do the trick just fine. The skin on your feet is very similar to the skin on the rest of your body: The more you exfoliate, the softer it'll be.
3) Lotion them up
Now that you've thoroughly polished your feet, you'll want to moisturize them to prevent skin from getting rough again. For most people, this is as simple as remembering to apply a little lotion to your feet when you apply it to the rest of your body after a shower, but if you need a more intensive treatment, there's another option.
4) Cover them with thick, fuzzy socks
Before you go to bed each night, put another thick layer of ultra-moisturizing lotion all over your feet, and then cover them with thick socks. They'll help trap all that moisture close to your feet, where it can penetrate deep underneath dry, callused skin. In more extreme situations, you can apply petroleum jelly, as its even thicker and more moisturizing than your typical lotion.
5) Purchase a pumice stone
Exfoliating a little extra dead skin off with a pumice stone is a great addition to make to your bedtime routine. When you wake up in the morning, take off your socks and gently remove dead skin using a pumice stone. It works a little differently than your traditional shower scrub does, giving you the little extra 'oomph' you need for the softest feet ever.
6) Wear shoes whenever possible
Last but not least, you should always have shoes (or socks) on if you want your feet to stay soft. They callous in response to hard ground, and they also pick up quite a bit of dirt when you walk around barefoot. The more you keep them covered up, the softer they will be (and the cleaner your sheets will stay).
