From Wall Street to 10-Unit Franchise: 28-Year-Old Not Stopping Yet. Young Entrepreneur Balances Family while Thriving at Work, Franchising Despite Downturned Economy

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Just a year ago, when the stock market began its initial descent, then 27-year-old stock broker Jonah Engler knew it was his time to shine. The bumpy economy didn’t mean anything other than an incredible and viable opportunity for this young entrepreneur, as he cashed in some stocks and focused on diversifying his portfolio through franchising and looked into a celluar phone franchise.

“I was hungry to find a personal solution to the downturn in the economy. I knew my day-to-day job was adapting to the climate, so I decided to put some eggs in another basket,” said the Brooklyn, NY resident. “I did a lot of research on recession-friendly business models. Wireless technology is improving, I thought, and no one is getting rid of their cellular phone. Wireless franchise it is.”

In April, 2008, Engler became a single-unit franchise for Wireless Zone, a 330-plus-unit franchise and premium retailer of Verizon Wireless service and products. In the following few months, Engler became so enamored by the idea of multi-unit franchise operation that he opened four more stores. Now, one year later, Engler is balancing a growing family (wife expecting their third child) and business with the opening of his 10th location.

“When I was looking at franchising, my initial thought was it costs a lot of money. But the second I walked into Wireless Zone, I instantly knew it was worth it. That’s a testament to the brand,” Engler said, noting that his 10 locations are spread across the tri-state region of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. “Wireless Zone has owned the wireless marketplace, in an economy that is producing many business failures.”

Engler has relied on his experience from a decade long business career to identify the perfect franchise for him. Several of his childhood friends handle the day-to-day management of the stores while Engler manages the day-to-day stock brokering for his existing clientele.

“Whenever I have worked with a client, I know that I have to provide them with an opportunity that looks great. With Wireless Zone, the second our customers walk in the door, they know they are going to get a cellular experience second to none,” he said. “The interactivity provided creates the experience. My team takes care of the rest.”

Engler’s Wireless Zone cellular phone franchises are also some of the first to implement a more interactive atmosphere for their customers. It is among an entirely new generation of customer-centric stores updated and refitted to create a friendly, inviting retail experience. With technology moving at lightning speed, customers need access to the right information and expert service to ensure they find the phone that matches their individual needs.

For the new prototypes, Wireless Zone’s executive team selectively picked its newest franchisee, in part because Engler will lead the brand’s continued cluster growth strategy throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas.

“It is inspiring to find a hungry, young entrepreneur like Jonah,” said Kevin Sinclair, Wireless Zone’s CEO. “Jonah has turned a blind eye to the economy and continued his personal and business development. He is a great franchisee to have in our system.”

Founded in 1988 as "The Car Phone Store", Wireless Zone has become the nation's largest wireless retail franchisor and was ranked the No. 1 franchise in its category by Entrepreneur magazine. Every store is independently owned and operated, exclusively offering Verizon Wireless products and services. In 2009, the more than 320-unit franchise has already opened over 20 units with its eyes set on selling nearly 100 more thanks to its recession friendly and finance friendly model. Wireless Zone is a division of Automotive Technologies, Inc.
